Your Auren guide: curly hair in summer

Your free Auren guide πŸ’› β€” thanks for joining.

If you have curls, you already know: your hair asks for moisture all year round, and in summer it begs for it. The spiral shape of the fibre keeps natural sebum from reaching the ends, so curls start out dry by default β€” and sun, chlorine and salt multiply it.

What happens to your curls in summer

Accelerated dehydration, humidity frizz and loss of definition. Chlorine is especially aggressive: it opens the cuticle and strips away what little moisture the curl manages to hold.

The routine that works

Washing: spaced out (1-2 times a week), with sulphate-free shampoo or cowash. On other days, refresh with water and leave-in.

Layered moisture: leave-in + curl cream + oil to seal (order matters: from most watery to most oily). A weekly nourishing mask, no excuses.

Drying: with a cotton t-shirt or microfibre towel, patting β€” rubbing is frizz-making. Air dry or diffuse on low heat.

Night: satin pillowcase or satin bonnet, and a high pineapple to keep definition until morning.

Pool: wet your hair with fresh water before getting in β€” saturated fibre absorbs less chlorine β€” and rinse as soon as you're out.

Sun protection that doesn't flatten your curls

The sun degrades curls faster than any other hair type. Physical shade is essential, but a classic cap flattens the crown and leaves a mark. The trick: a high pineapple outside the cap β€” with a top-opening cap your curls go free up top, or with a magnetic back-opening cap if you prefer a ponytail. Curls protected, definition intact.

Summer hairstyles for curly hair

High pineapple, loose bun with a satin scrunchie, loose braids for beach days. The less you handle your curls dry, the better they'll reach September.
